![]() a few tuesday's back... Tuesday, March 31, 2009 if you've stopped here in the past to look at the pictures or read a few words you have no doubt stumbled upon a snapshot of kids and soccer. soccer for most men my age jerked up in the south was something we 'did' in gym class. sure, i had heard of Pele and even american Kyle Rote, Jr (mainly from him competing on ABC's Superstars back in the 70s.) but i didn't really discover a love for the sport until i was a soccer father. i've learned enough to coach the peewees in rec league and like to kick a ball myself. for gotreadgo visitors from abroad i don't have to explain the commadarie the game seems to induce. for us americans, i'm sure it has to do with our kids. it has definitely kept me close to mine. back on march 10, a few tuesday's back, the local soccer community lost a teen named Ryan Robinson. he was just a junior in high school. ryan felt ill after soccer practice on a thursday, by tuesday he had passed away. the cause of his death was methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, MRSA. an incredibly deadly form of staph infection, albeit, not necessarily a rare one. it was only a few months back that a female soccer player in the area died because of MRSA. there's plenty of info online about protecting yourself and your kids from MRSA. Ryan played over in Jessamine County, for their club team as a member of the 92 Storm. i'm sure his team is devastated to lose a teammate and friend and i won't try to comment on what his parents must be going through, devastated is an understatement. so our team of kids all wore t-shirts with Ryan's team name and his number on the back, even though our team doesn't even play in the same county or compete against them there's that thread that soccer sews through all of us involved as players, parents, coaches and fans... storm sc #20.
