Mystery.

The mystery isn't in the technique, it's in each of us.
--Harry Callahan

Damn, I love Callahan's work. Underrated is an overused word but in this case the hat fits. Callahan cannot be boxed up in a nice little photo-package and tied with a bow. Admired by greats of his time and as a self-taught shooter who eventually rose to be chairman of the photography department at the Rhode Island School of Design, he was definitely not an unknown--but you rarely see people throwing his name around in discussions of the 'greats.' Yet when reminded of his work, most agree. He was most assuredly...fucking great. Personal, abstract, experimental and many times vaguely confrontational, his images sometimes are more about what is not visible in the moments than what is...to me, that is absolutely inspiring.
