![]() break out. Wednesday, February 21, 2007 an intriguing article in the telegraph caught my eye this morning. subject...email addiction. are you an addict, i might be (of course, i could quit anytime i want!) and it is quite obvious, we addicts are not alone. here in the US if you work in a corporate environment you know doubt have witnessed co-workers attached to their blackberrys and cell phones during meetings, constantly trolling for new mail. i have been in meetings with people at the top of the food chain who ignore the whole meeting while dawdling with their email gadgetry. i've even had people stop in my office and ask if they could borrow my computer (real quick!) to check their email...not that big of a deal, but they can't wait the extra 10 minutes to return to their office to see if they have gotten another spam about their inadequate schlong? i joke about being an addict but i really don't have it that bad, when busy i just don't bother with cyber-communique'. of course, that too has its drawbacks. because the email you receive, given the odds, is from an addict, so you therefore seem like an anti-social prick (wait, i resemble that remark) for not instantly replying. the article talks about a new 12-step type program for the email junkie that was developed by a 'life coach ' for cases such as a golfer he knew who checked his blackberry after every shot and ended up losing a potential client who was along on the golf outing who thought the constant checker was a socially-inept obsessive. 'life coach' could only be something us ugly americans devise. 'hey coach, can i get in? to my life i mean, put me in coach, put me in coach i got game!' sheesh, sometimes i'm embarrassed for my people. anyhoo, i joke about this but with our continued use of wired and wireless devices to stay connected it is not hard to see how one might actually be addicted to communication. try taking it away and watch the withdrawal...you know it would not be pretty. business in this country is now done via all these gadgets to the extent that if you don't play, then you really don't play...but more alarming than that is this...research by king's college london showed that addiction to email should be of larger concern because such technology depletes cognitive abilities more rapidly than drugs. email users suffered a 10% drop in IQ scores, more than twice the fall recorded by marijuana users...ahem, YOU'VE GOT...DUMB! break out from the connectivity once and again...it might be make you more better smarter. broke, broke.
