Wednesday, December 20, 2006 The traditional glass Christmas tree ornament is descended from the English 'witch ball' or 'watch ball' - a brightly colored glass sphere hung in the windows of 18th Century cottages to ward off evil spirits. The bright colors of the ornaments would attract the spirits and the strands inside the glass ball, usually hair of some sort, would trap them.
