![]() fall on me. Wednesday, October 25, 2006 two things i'm loving...my rediscovered Ansco Pix Panorama camera, been blowing through a few rolls and that REM 'best of' compilation of songs from their IRS label years. i saw REM for the first time right as Murmur was released, early fall of '83. i had a ticket to see The English Beat and the opening act AuPairs cancelled the tour and REM got added to the Southern leg of the tour. the English Beat were having some success with 'I Confess' on mTv, so no one cared about the opener. no one but me and maybe a handful of music snobs who had read the glorius reviews being cast upon the Athens quartet. Stipe came out after their set and handed me a long sandwich toothpick and mumbled something then he and Buck watched the Beat beside me. i saw them 8 more times before they signed to Warner Bros. and released 'Green.' typical fanboy shitty mentality, i lost interest when they 'made it.' i felt like i had lost my secret. hearing the old songs again made me realize my first inkling of not being embarrassed to be from 'the South' came from those four normal georgia guys and those songs that were somehow Southern but not 'country.' i urge you to pick it up if you have forgotten how good and crypticlly foreign and utterly alluring these guys were in their early works...oh, and get yourself a Pix as well. I think mine cost .59 cents. tree outside my office. Pix Panorama. FujiColor 400. Toy Polloy... make it if you can. Comment (6) | Permalink |
