lately at work i have fell back into listening to noise while i labor. noise bands i mean. this oddity in the underground is nothing new, the No Wave movement in new york in the late 70's laid the scratched ground work with bands like Live Skull and artists like Lydia Lunch. Lou Reed pre-dated the movement with Metal Machine Music, a noise record that i remember hearing in '76 and thinking...shit, i can do that, i was 12. in the early 90s i discovered Whitehouse after recieving a letter from member peter sotos after he had heard Ted Bundy's Volkswagon (he listened to us with Albini after I had mailed the god-man a tape.) from there, it was a downward spiral towards the Japanoise bands like Ruins, Hanatarash and Merzbow. In a world where Austinites like the Butthole Surfers and Crust seemed poppy at points, i kept searching for the more obscure and more nihilistic. KK Null, Men's Recovery Project and Boyd Rice were headphone regulars...this noise is catharsis to me and lately i have been enjoying the new breed, lexington boys Hair Police, subpop idols Wolf Eyes, the underbelly of Detroit, Mammal, wunderduo Lightning Bolt and so many others...the web is a great place to find this music but i urge you to go see some of this mindwarp live. you may have to go to a kid's basement or an art gallery to get your head right but they are out there seething if you look. you have no idea what is going on in the underworld of music and art unless you put yourself out there, i know it ain't for everyone but the mixture of images, sound, performance, people and statement make this a relevant artform even some 93 years after Luigi Russolo penned his manifesto L'Arte de Rumori (The Art of Noises). rock your shit out.
